Pediatric pH Probe Depth
Quick reference – placement formulas
Most Accurate Formula (Strachan)
Best validated modern formula for children
≥3 years old.
Formula
Depth (cm) = 0.184 × height (cm) + 4.4
- Derived from large pediatric
cohort
- More accurate than Strobel and
other legacy formulas
- Still requires radiographic
confirmation
Traditional Formula (Strobel)
Historically used and still referenced in
some guidelines, but tends to overestimate depth.
Formula
Depth (cm) = 0.252 × height (cm) + 5
- Simple height‑based estimate
- Often places probe too deep
Modified Strobel
Adjusted to reduce overestimation of the
original Strobel formula.
Formula
Depth (cm) = 0.226 × height (cm) + 6.7
KHC‑F (Anatomic Method)
A bedside, height‑independent method used
in pediatric GI nursing.
Formula
Depth (cm) = (Nose → Ear Canal) + (Nose →
Nipple Line)
- ...Useful when height is
unavailable
- ...Accuracy ~66–74%
Placement Notes
- --Probe tip should sit ~2
vertebrae above the diaphragm
- --Radiographic confirmation
recommended (probe at widest point of the cardiac
silhouette)
- --Formulas provide estimates,
not final placement
